All things you should know about mosquitos
So what is a Mosquito?
Mosquitos are flying insects that live in almost all parts of the world. They are scientifically named as
culicidae. Belonging to the order diptera. The name mosquito came from Spanish and portugese which
means little fly.
What do they feed on?
It is a general mistake that mosquitoes feed on other animals' blood. Really they consume nectar, aphid
honeydew, and plant juices. In most of the species their mouth parts are shaped for piercing other animals'
bodies for getting blood.
Why do mosquitoes need blood?
Mosquitoes consume blood for breeding purposes. They need blood for getting protein and essential
nutrients for their breeding purposes. When it feeds blood it gets the power to lay more eggs and produce
new health offspring.
How mosquitoes breed?
Most of the mosquitoes lay egg on the water through the process called dapping. females just fly over the
water, bobbing up and down to the water surface and dropping eggs more or less singly. A healthy
mosquito can breed upto 100-200 eggs on average. A single breeding pair can make a colony of 1000
mosquitoes within weeks.
Life Cycle of Mosquitoes
Their life cycle starts from egg, larva, pupa and adult. Each phase can last upto 5 to 14 days depending
upon the weather and climate conditions. Sometimes it may take months or weeks to become a mosquito.
The average lifespan of mosquitoes depends on 14 days to months. If they get a perfect living condition
they live longer.
Mosquito bites and diseases.
Mosquitoes can act as vectors for many disease-causing viruses and parasites. Infected mosquitoes carry
these organisms from person to person without exhibiting symptoms themselves.[99] Mosquito-borne
diseases include:
Viral diseases - Yellow fever, Dengue fever, Chickunguniya
Parasitic disease - Malaria
Controlling Mosquitoes
Many measures have been tried for mosquito control, including the elimination of breeding places,
exclusion via window screens and mosquito nets, biological control with parasites such as fungi and
nematodes or predators such as fish, copepods, dragonfly nymphs and adults, and some species of lizard
and gecko. Another approach is to introduce large numbers of sterile males.
Expert control.
If the mosquito colony is large you should have to consult a mosquito control expert for dealing with the job.
They can help you with mosquito control services and help you eliminate most of the breeds from a series of treatment methods.
